Dominant Denning Does the Double

The 2020 Motor Racing season finally got underway at Mondello Park this weekend and the Coffee 2 Go Fiesta ST Championship provided some of the best entertainment over the two day race meeting.
Alex Denning had been quickest in pre season testing and he carried this form into qualifiying, his Dennings Cars/Murray Motorsport machine taking pole position early on in the session by a considerable margin. Kevin Doran, a double winner in 2019, was his closest challenger, with series sponsor Graham McDonnell in third and Barry-John McHenry in fourth.
When the lights went out for the first race though, Doran nailed the perfect start to grab the lead and immediately went into defensive mode as Denning tried to find a way past. Try as he might, the ex karter was unable to find a gap, and with McDonnell in tow, this trio began to pull away from the pack. As they came down to start the final lap though, Denning had got a run out of the final corner and he crossed the line side by side with the leader. After rounding turn one together, Denning emerged ahead and he held on for an impressive win

The scrap between Doran (leading), Denning and McDonnell was one of the best of the day.

As ever in the ST Championship, the top six finishers in race one were reversed to form the front of the grid for race two. This put Barry John McHenry on pole with Denning back in sixth. An incredible start saw Denning up to second by turn one, and already attempting to wrest the lead from front row starter Michael Fitzgerald. A subsequent safety period stymied his progress but once the race was underway again, he quickly took the lead and crossed the line almost seven seconds ahead of his closest rival to do the double and take an early lead in the Championship.A delighted McDonnell was second with Barry-John McHenry completing the podium in third.

Alex Denning: “I’m over the moon to take the pole, double win and double fastest lap after a long off-season. The practice on track and off track sim racing, combined with a more calculated and patient approach to racing, have definitely paid off in making me a better driver.
With last years champion Erik Holstein, 3 time ST champion Dave Maguire and my father Liam all expected to be joining the already competitive ST grid in August, I will have to on top form to add to my winning streak!”
