Tommy Byrne to Tackle Mondello Fiesta 6 Hour Race

Having starred on his return to Mondello Park at the Historic Racing Festival, one of Ireland’s most famous racing drivers will return to the Kildare race circuit to take part in their annual 6 Hour Fiesta Endurance Race.
Tommy Byrne, made famous for both his incredible single seater career, and subsequently, the book and film chartering his rise and fall, earned himself even more fans when he grabbed pole position in the ex James Hunt Hesketh F1 car at Mondello Park in August. Having battled mightily for the lead, the now 60 year old Dundalk native showed that he had lost non of his famed speed as he raced to two runner up spots despite not having raced in many many years.
Perhaps bouyed by this, and the support he received over that weekend, Tommy has accepted an invitation from Mondello Park to return once more and form part of a team for their hugely popular end of season Fiesta Endurance race.
Further details of Tommy Byrne’s team and team mates for the event will be released in the coming weeks.
About Tommy Byrne:
For a fleeting moment in the early 80s Tommy Byrne was the world’s greatest driver, the motor racing equivalent of George Best and Muhammad Ali all rolled into one. In a little over four years Byrne went from driving a Mini Cooper in stockcar racing to the big-time in Formula One. Eddie Jordan the former team-owner, who worked with both Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher, will tell you: ‘Forget Schuey and Senna. Tommy Byrne was the best of them all.’ His rise was meteoric and his fall spectacular.. His fall was as fast as his rise to the top and was chartered in an award winning book Crashed And Byrned (2008). This was followed up in 2016 by the Crash and Burn film, which won a covered IFTA Award in 2018.
