GP2 rookie Richie Stanaway drove impeccably around the streets of Monaco, claiming a lights to flag victory for Status Grand Prix in its maiden GP2 season.
Beating Ferrari Junior Raffaele Marciello on the drag to turn one and maintaining the pace he had shown all weekend, Richie dominated the race taking the chequered flag over two seconds ahead of his closest rival.
Marlon drove faultlessly, avoiding many clashes, bringing the car home in 18th place.
Richie Stanaway “It feels quite surreal to win here in Monaco today and of all the places to win your first GP2 race, this has to be the best. GP2 is still so new to me and with this just being my third race weekend it really is a fantastic feeling. My engineer Andrew gave me an awesome car, we tuned it up a bit from yesterday and when the car is working so well it makes my job a lot easier. The tough thing is the mental concentration around here, you just need to stay focussed and get into a rhythm. The best way for me to do this was to keep pushing and it worked.
“It’s such a cool place to lead and win a race and it’s such an amazing track. It’s probably one of the coolest races I’ve ever done and I’m very happy. Success gives you confidence and builds momentum which is what we needed. Big thanks to the team as they have done an awesome job this weekend too.”
Marlon Stockinger “The start was good again and it was pretty tricky as I had to miss the accident at the hairpin but quite a few people got past me there. From that point I just had to manage the pace in the race and concentrate on not putting it in the wall. Without much action and a pit stop there wasn’t much I could do today.
“I’m so happy for the team and congrats for them winning with Richie, I won here in GP3 for Status and now they have a GP2 win. We just have to look towards Austria now.”
Team Principal Teddy Yip, Jr “Winning is an unbelievable result today, given that we won with Marlon in GP3 last time we were here. It’s a fantastic feeling to be Monaco race-winners with Richie in our first year of GP2. Richie has driven phenomenally all weekend, giving us a little scare on the final corner but he says he was just messing around – heart in mouth moment, so thanks for that Richie!
“Today’s victory gives us some really good momentum to build on for the rest of the season.”
Managing Director David Kennedy “This is just the best result that you can have in your maiden GP2 season. I believe we had the fastest car and driver all weekend. Richie was quickest in practice on the prime tyre and fastest in qualifying until a small mistake damaged his wing. Today Richie showed the incredible speed and talent that he has and he is a thoroughly deserving winner having controlled the race from start to finish. The result is testimony to the hard work that the engineers and mechanics put in all season and may this victory be the first of many.”
