ON THE ROAD – IAN LYNAS PREVIEWS THE NEW ABARTH 600E

Soon to arrive, is the most powerful Abarth to date, the 600e with 280bhp from its 207 Kw e-motor. Rest to 100kph (62mph) takes just  5.9 seconds with a top speed of 200kph (124mph).

Racing knowledge from Abarth has brought this newcomer to the open road. The e-motor has been tested on the Formula E test bench and two versions will be available, a less powerful version with 240bhp 175Kw and the more powerful limited edition Scorpionissima (280bhp). Developed with Stellantis Motorsport, it sets new standards for an electric hot hatch, no doubt other manufacturers will follow.

You will certainly not fail to recognise this sporty Italian with its muscular exterior styling, chunky alloys and aerodynamic rear spoiler. Together with racing specialists Michelin, Sabelt, JTEKT and Alcon the 600e has been brought to the market. Back in 2021, Abarth and Michelin began to work on tyre choice for the newcomer and as a result tyre choice is the Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyre, which provides an excellent level of grip, both in wet and dry conditions. I have memories of testing Michelin Pilots at Jerez. Alcon have provided brakes from the racing world, brakes which have a larger surface ensuring less fade. JTEKT’s torsen mechanical lsd offers better trajectory, improved handling, traction in turns and much added safety in slippery conditions. Both versions have three drive modes, the Turismo provides smoother acceleration, 110Kw power for the standard car and 140Kw for the range topping Scorpionissima, top speed is limited to 150kph (93mph). Scorpion Street comes with 150Kw and 170Kw respectively with top speed limited to180kph (112mph) and the third drive mode Scorpion Track delivers top performance. Abarth and Stellantis Motorsport paid attention to many other key elements in bringing the 600e to market, they increased suspension stiffness and reinforced the chassis with a rear anti-roll bar.

In order to make driving a more enjoyable experience the 600e comes with a range of ADAS equipment, adaptive cruise control, electric parking brake and a comprehensive safety package featuring six airbags and drowsy driver detection is included, no excuse for nodding off at the wheel. Adding to making life easier with the 600e comes hands free tailgate opening, cargo flex kit and there is the USB type A pus C port, rear parking aid, rain and dusk sensors, keyless start and a CarPlay and Android Auto wireless adaptor. The sports theme is carried to the interior, no great surprise, the steering wheel leather with Alcantara inserts, is not only stylish but designed to deliver maximum grip. The uniqueness of this Abarth is achieved by specific choices such as dedicated seats, aluminium pedals, foot rest and floor mats. Further enrichments, a kick plate, a seven inch cluster colour TFT with specific graphics.

Added pleasure, comfort and safety with connected services under two names Connect ONE which is available as standard or Connect PLUS which is by subscription. You can also benefit from a voice recognition system and take advantage of automatic mapping. Many will consider this the jewel in the crown from a company which was founded in 1949 by Carlo Abarth and its association with Fiat began in 1952 and in 1971 Carlo Abarth sold his company to Fiat and today Abarth is part of the large Stellantis Group.
