Ireland’s Daniel Kelleher Stars at IAME Euroseries

The first round of the Iame Euroseries was held in Spain from the 9th to 13th of March. 11 year old Daniel Kelleher from Mogeely, Co. Cork was competing in the Mini X30 class for 8-12 year olds. The race meeting was held over 5 days. It started off with testing on Wednesday and Thursday and Daniel was always among the fastest times in both wet and dry conditions.
Qualifying took place on Friday, in wet conditions, and Daniel qualified 3rd out of 49 drivers. Saturday consisted of three heats. With championship points awarded at the end of the heats and again for the final, Daniel knew how important the heats were. He started in a determined mood and took a clean sweep- winning all three!
The final heat was held on Sunday morning. Daniel just needed to finish in the top 5 to stay at the top of the heats classification. He drove a controlled race and finished 2nd. This gave him the maximum 21 championship points available and a 4 point lead over Henry Domain (U.K.) at this stage. It also gave him pole position for the final. Daniel went straight into the lead at the start of the final with Jessie Philips (U.K.) on his back bumper. Daniel and Jessie pulled away from the rest of the pack. With Jessie still right behind Daniel had to defend his lead on the last lap and held on to take the win by 0.073 of a second. This gave Daniel another 25 points and he has finished the weekend with a maximum score of 46 points and a 12 point lead over Jessie Philips. The next round of the championship will take place in Belgium on the 5th to the 8th of May.
We will be watching this young man’s progress closely as the year progresses.
