ON THE ROAD – IAN LYNAS PREVIEWS THE NEW BMW M5 CS

Coming soon- the fastest and most powerful ever BMW M production car, the M5 CS. Under the bonnet lurks a mighty 635bhp 4.4 litre V8 engine which can whisk you from rest to 100kph (62mph) in a mere three seconds and on to a top speed of 304kph (189mph).
The high revving nature of this eight cylinder engine tops out at 7,200rpm and the strong delivery is derived from motorsport. The characteristics of this engine can be altered at the touch of a button from the EFFICIENT mode to SPORT and SPORT+, the latter two further quickening the engine’s response to accelerator movements. Allied to the superb power unit is the M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. Even sportier, more luxurious and certainly exclusive, the new arrival expands the ranks of performance focussed CS models. A car for everyday use, this new saloon is the ultimate incarnation of the M5 and this is the first time there has been a special edition of this iconic model and with it comes true supercar performance.
The newcomer builds on the established presence of the M3 CS, M4 CS and M2 CS and it is the flagship model of the range and it is most certainly at the top rung of the CS ladder. The new model builds on the chassis of the M5 Competition and features a seven mm drop in ride height plus shock absorbers developed for the M8 Gran Coupe. As well as bringing added comfort to the drive experience, these dampers also reduce fluctuation in wheel loads, greatly improving on the limit handling. The bearing springs at the front and rear axle have been retuned and damper control has also been refined to consider the lower vehicle weight and the tyres increased performance potential. Standard tyre fitment are Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres, front 275/35 and 285/35 at the rear; wheels are 20 inch M forged in Y spoke design with a Gold Bronze finish. With such performance at hand stopping power is critical, to say the least, and M Carbon ceramic brakes are standard fitment and they are 23kg lighter than those fitted to the M5 Competition.
To reduce weight the bonnet of the new model is made entirely of lightweight CFPR as are the exterior mirror caps, rear spoiler and rear diffuser. The exhaust system features a quartet of stainless steel tailpipes with Gold Bronze accents. The kidney grille surround is also finished in this colour as are the M gills on the front wings and M5 CS badges in the grille and boot lid. The door sill finishers come with illuminated badging while extended shadowline trim features on the exterior mirrors, window frame surrounds and B- pillar. As you would expect the interior is race inspired, yet is luxurious and this member of the CS family can seat four. All four seats are M Carbon bucket style for added grip and comfort. The M Alcantara steering wheel is wrapped in the race-derived material from which it takes its name while the gearshift paddles are carbon fibre. There is a 12.3 inch central display which provides access to driving dynamic systems; this designed to make it easy to keep a clear eye on the myriad of functions of the driving dynamic systems and the M xDrive all wheel drive.
The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional brings the very latest BMW Operating System 7 and many digital services as standard. This new CS model includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with the extended functionality and this technology learns routines, habits and preferences to help get the best out of the in-car functionality. Smartphone integration is offered as standard without any runtime limitations and is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
You could say this new addition to the BMW CS family is a car for all reasons, happy on the open road or the race track.
