Cameron Fenton returned to the Irish Supercar Powered By Pirelli series last weekend at Brands Hatch for the final three rounds of their 2019 series.
A pacesetter in the championship in 2018, the Greystones man received an invitation to compete at the event from championship organisers ASK Racing. As part of the famous Formula Ford Festival, the Supercars took to the track four times over the weekend, and Cameron was immediately on the pace. Despite being held up slightly on his fastest lap in qualifying, he was happy with second and a front row start for the opening race. When the lights went out, the class returnee made no mistakes to lead the pack through the famous Paddock Hill Bend and immediately got his head down to increase his lead. Despite two safety car interventions, which negated the lead, he crossed the line almost seven seconds to the good, to take the win, with fastest lap too.
Race two was, in Cameron’s words, “one to forget” as he was hit from behind whilst running in third, right with the leaders. This left him starting at the back for the third and final race of the weekend.
With the blood up, the Fenton Fires backed driver was on a charge and was up to P7 by the second corner. By the start of lap two he was fourth, which became third with a run round the outide of Paul Parr at Druids. A brief Safety Car period closed the pack up again and once they were released, Fenton was on the attack once again. A run at Gary Corcoran out of Clearways annexed second and immediately afterwards he sliced down the inside of champion elect Philip Jones into Paddock Hill corner to take the lead- and subsequently the win.
Cameron Fenton: It was an amazing experience to race on the famous Brands Hatch Indy Circuit both in very wet and dry weather. It is great to be able to step into such a high powered car after a full year and take another 2 first place trophies ahead of the 2019 class regulars. A big congratulations goes out to Philip Jones who took the 2019 Irish Supercar championship on Sunday .
I want to say a huge thanks to Alan at ASK Racing for the car for the weekend and a big thanks to Kyle Draper for his non stop work ensuring the car was prepped and ready all weekend, and a big thanks to Dad and Charlotte for coming and supporting me throughout the weekend.”
About The Irish Supercar Championship Powered By Pirelli:
In 2015, ASK Racing introduced a new series to Irish Motorsport, the ASK Supercar Championship, now known as the Irish Supercar Championship – Powered by Pirelli.
The series runs the former RT2000/Supercar spaceframe machines, powered by 2000cc Zetec engines. The SHP built spaceframe machines formed the basis of the RT2000/Supercar class, which arguably produced some of the best racing ever seen in Ireland.
As well as racing at Mondello Park in Kildare, the series visits both Kirkistown and Bishopscourt in Northern Ireland and Brands Hatch in Kent in the UK. Drivers also have the option of competing in non championship events at circuits around the UK and Europe.
