Belfast’s Jack Young Clinches 2019 Clio Cup UK Title!

Following a dramatic weekend of racing in the final round of the Renault UK Clio Cup, Belfast’s Jack Young has been crowned 2019 Champion. He is the youngest ever winner in the history of the Championship and secured the title in style with a comprehensive win in the final race of the season at Brands Hatch.
“This is the moment I’ve dreamed of!” declared Jack as he stepped from the MRM Clio in the winner’s enclosure. “It’s been a long hard-fought season, full of wheel to wheel action and I knew I just needed to believe in my racing ability today. I’ve won seven of the races this season, set multiple fastest laps and learned so much. Everyone in the team has played his or her part in making me the 2019 Champion. And obviously I want to recognize the support we have had from Renault throughout the year.”
Although Young celebrated his 18th birthday this week he had little time to relax as he prepared for the final Renault UK Clio Cup round. Torrential rain made a lottery of the racing at times but Jack remained cool under the intense pressure. Going into the final race with a 1-point deficit in the Championship standings, his race win and fastest lap of the race converted this into a 5-point Championship victory.
Young’s thoughts are already turning to next year. “Now I need to sit down with my team to think about 2020.” declared Jack. “It’s fantastic to win the Clio Championship but the real test will be how I use this as a platform for taking a big step forward in my racing career. Past Clio Champions have gone on to more senior circuit racing championships but over the winter I want to evaluate all my options. Lots of proposals are being put in front of me, which is nice, but as everyone in motorsport knows it is critical to be with the right team, have the right car and find the sponsors to join us on the next stage of the journey.”
But for now it will be about a team celebration of a job well-done and then back to school to catch up on his all-important studies.
