One of Ireland’s top saloon car racers, Erik Holstein, has thrown the cat firmly amongst the pigeons by confirming his entry to the Mondello Park run Fiesta ST Championship.
Holstein has enjoyed success in many different saloon car classes, having won championships in Punto Abarths, Irish Touring Cars and SEAT Supercup Ireland. More recently, he won the TCR Class at the 12H of Dubai at the wheel of an Audi RS3.
With a new promotional package from Leo Nulty Promotions in place for the ST series in 2018, a number of new drivers have been persuaded to enter or return to the series. Holstein is keen to return to domestic motorsport, having challenged for victory at the 6 Hour Fiesta Race in November with Leonard brothers Michael and Karl, and the ST series was the obvious choice. Michael Leonard and Holstein viewed a number of cars before plumping for the ex Steven Kirwan machine, which has lain idle for over 18 months. Predictably, the former champion showjumper was on the pace immediately when he shook the car down on the International Circuit at today’s Trackdays.ie event. With Philip Wright running the car for Holstein, he finds himself up against his longtime team, Murray Motorsport, who have been unbeaten since the series’ inception, with Dave Maguire having done the hat trick in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Holstein is just one of a number of new drivers to join the Fiesta ST Championship for 2019; the others will be announced shortly. The 2019 Fiesta ST series kicks off with a triple header at Mondello Park on April 13/14.
