Matt Round-Garrido this weekend sealed the Dawson WAM Northern Irish Formula Ford Championship, with Bernard Dolan’s Team Dolan taking their second championship in 2018.
Matt wrapped up the championship in race one on Saturday morning at Kirkistown, the young Team Dolan driver kept his nose clean and maintained composure to earn both the win and the championship.
Sadly, after Garrido’s car number 27 earned pole position for the famous Martin Donnelly Trophy race, a small crack was discovered in the bellhousing, putting an end to Matt’s running and his chance at taking the trophy back home.
The championship win earns Round-Garrido a coveted ticket to the Road To Indy shootout later this year!
The dates and location of the Scholarship Shootout will be confirmed later this year. The winner will secure an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Ireland’s Keith Donegan, who will contest this year’s USF2000 season after claiming the Scholarship title last December, and Florida’s Oliver Askew, who won the shootout in 2016, went on to win last year’s USF2000 championship and, in 2018, will compete on the middle rung of the Mazda Road to Indy ladder, the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires.
Matt had this to say after his championship winning weekend:
“I still can’t believe we are champions, it’s been a long season but in the end, it was really worth it. I need to thank Bernard, Tracy (Dolan), the team, Excel Labels, Mick (Merrigan) and my dad. They all have provided a support network around me through the year and they have guided me both on the track and off it.
Right now, my focus will turn to the final round at Donington Park but I have a ticket to shootout, I would love to go out and see what I can bring to the table but we need to sit down as a team and discuss it”
“Matt is a talented racer and to come over to Ireland and win the championship shows you how good his development over the year has been. We still have a few races together and talks on the future have already begun. The team and Matt have performed exceptional all year and we wouldn’t have this championship without them”
