Just over one year ago Glenn Allen died, leaving his family, friends and the Irish rallying world in shock. “Mr. Sideways”, as he was known on the stages thanks to his flamboyant driving style, had built a large fan base in the 1990’s in his MKII Escort and later in WRC machinery.
“Mr Sideways, the Glenn Allen Story” celebrates the memories and action of the Cookstown native with interviews with the people who supported and helped him during his career. The film takes you from the beginning of his rally days, to his charge for the Northern Ireland Rally Championship.
Contributors include Eugene Donnelly, Richard Hogg, Kevin Lynch and Frank Kelly who all competed against Allen; Derek McGeehan, his long term co-driver Damien Connolly and others who had played a part in his story talk about his character and talent .
The story of how it took 3 Corolla WRC cars to win the 2007 Northern Ireland Championship is compelling viewing, as we get a feel of the determination it took to finally take the championship that he had his eyes on for many years.
When I was watching the DVD, I felt like there were two possible endings. One where it focuses in on the loss of Glenn, or where it remembered the years of rallying he enjoyed. Happily, the DVD is in the vein of the second, it doesn’t dwell on the sadness or poignancy, instead relives the memories through footage, interviews and excellent narrative from “Plum” Tyndall.
This is a great gift for the motorsport fan, and a great celebration of one of the gentlemen of rallying.
“Mr Sideways, the Glenn Allen Story” retails at £14.99 and is available now from the RPM Motorsport website.
