Prema / Theodore Racing made history today claiming their maiden GP2 Series victory at the inaugural Baku race weekend.
After claiming pole position on the streets of Baku, GP2 rookie Antonio Giovinazzi stayed out of trouble and drove a mature race to take his first victory of the season.
Unfortunately, fast Frenchman Pierre Gasly was put out of contention after just three hundred metres when he was involved in an unavoidable first corner incident forcing him to retire.
Sunday’s GP2 Sprint Race sees Giovinazzi start from 8th place on the reversed grid, while Gasly will try to put today’s bad luck behind him and score some valuable championship points.
# 20 – Antonio Giovinazzi
“Winning my maiden GP2 race is such an outstanding emotion. I struggled a bit at the start but from that point on the pace was good, especially on prime tyres. I want to thank the team for giving me a perfect car. I hope to do well tomorrow too starting from the 8th place as there are plenty of passing opportunities. We will try to improve the start”.
# 21 – Pierre Gasly
“The race today was pretty short for me with 300 meters before retiring. It’s a shame since I had a good start overtaking two cars before the first corner. Then I was fighting in turn one with Nato who didn’t leave me any space from the inside forcing me to go over the kerb to avoid the contact. Still, there was no space. I couldn’t do anything more at that point and Canamasas crashed into me from the back. It’s a shame to retire as the car was really quick. Now we have to start from the back so we’ll try to come back as much as possible.”
