Big Weekend for McGovern as he aims to clinch Zetec Title and Star in SEAT Supercup

Rising saloon star Sean McGovern has a big weekend ahead at the Teng Tools ICCR Leinster Trophy meeting at Mondello Park. The Motorsport Ireland Young Driver of the Year nominee has been hugely impressive all season in his Morgan Dempsey run Fiesta Zetec and can clinch the coveted Siltex Safety title this weekend with a top ten finish in the opening race on Sunday. With six wins already under his belt though, he will doubtless want to add to this, so expect to see him right at the sharp end from the off.

Sean is keen to progress his career and to this end has already tested a SEAT Supercup car and a TCR Cupra. Unsurprisingly, he was fast in both and will decide his 2025 plans in the coming weeks. This weekend, however, he is going to be busy as he takes over his Dad Rod’s SEAT Supercup to take on all of the class regulars at what is arguably the biggest ICCR meeting of the year. The 340bhp machines have some four times the power of his usual mount and run  slick tyres, with paddle shift etc. They are a factory built touring car, a far cry from the budget Fiesta Zetec machine which the young Dubliner has starred in this year.

With wet conditions forecast, can McGovern upset the formbook in SEAT Supercup Ireland this weekend?

Sean McGovern: “It’s been a great season and there have been some fantastic battles. The Zetec series is probably one of the most competitive Championships in the country. Obviously, I’m delighted to be nominated for the Motorsport Ireland Young Driver of the Year award and plans are coming together for 2025 already. All going well, I can wrap the Zetec title up in Race One and then go and have some fun in the SEAT. It looks like rain all weekend, they say that’s a great leveller. Let’s see what happens!”

Neil Murphy, Siltex Safety: ” Sean has driven superbly all year. His battle with Rob Barrable in Kirkistown was fantastic to watch. Personally, I can’t wait to see him in the SEAT, and I think it’s fair to say the entire Siltex Safety Zetec grid will be cheering him on!”
