ON THE ROAD- IAN LYNAS PREVIEWS THE NEW TOYOTA RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 first appeared back in 1994 and in a number of markets it was known as either the Vanguard or the Wildlander; here in Ireland it has always been known as the RAV4, and it can claim to be the vehicle that started the wave of compact SUVs – and by the year 2020 sales had crossed the ten million mark. I can be listed amongst the huge number of owners and I ran one for three years and it never missed a beat.

Now, the giant carmaker has taken the wraps off the new, sixth generation model, one which builds on the legacy of its trailblazing predecessors by introducing advanced technologies that take performance and efficiency to a higher level and pioneers new standards for safety and a digital user experience. Two key factors, versatility and reliability have earned this popular vehicle enduring popularity with owner’s right across Europe and beyond; European sales have topped 2.5 million to date, more than 15 million have been sold worldwide.

The robust exterior styling reflects its authentic SUV spirit, something that is also expressed in a striking new model logo. With a strong frontal design and dynamic silhouette, the result a strong on road presence and the external dimensions are similar to those of its predecessor, while inside, a redesigned cabin gives driver and all passengers a sense of space and refined comfort. The new Arene software development platform is a step towards fully software-defined vehicles and it enables the creation and deployment of advanced safety and multimedia features in a digital environment. It powers new safety technologies, significantly enhancing security and adding advanced driver and parking assistance features and also it supports the global debut of a new Toyota multimedia system, providing enhanced connectivity, navigation and security tools, all operating faster than ever before. The ultra-efficient, new generation plug-in hybrid system has a dual DNA, operating both as an electric vehicle and convenient hybrid and can achieve 100km (62m) in electric driving – enough to meet the daily needs of most customers and offers the legendary flexibility and dependability of Toyota’s hybrid technology. The system features a battery with 30 per cent greater capacity, delivering more power, acceleration and efficiency and faster charging and a revised system design brings the additional benefits of a more dynamic drive and a spacious interior.

The newcomer will be available in Europe as a plug-in hybrid or a full hybrid, emphasising Toyota’s multi-pathway approach towards carbon neutrality. This provides customers with a choice of sustainable options, regardless of where they live or their individual circumstances. An improved front motor benefits from a 16kW increase in power to 150kW, combining with the new battery to provide powerful acceleration. Total output from the intelligent all-wheel drive (AWD-i) RAV4 is class leading at 300bhp, enabling 0-100kph (62mph) acceleration in 5.8 seconds. The battery pack maintains reliable and consistent performance thanks to improved cooling and the thermal management system switches automatically between coolant circuits depending on the operating conditions, keeping the battery at an ideal temperature to maintain optimum efficiency and charging performance. The new plug-in hybrid system also contributes to enhanced driving dynamics with the battery’s under-floor location securing a lower centre of gravity and increased body rigidity. A front-wheel-drive configuration is introduced on a plug-in hybrid RAV4 for the first time, making the technology accessible to more customers; with this version, maximum power is 264bhp. The latest generation powertrain also brings the introduction of a series of products and services to make the ownership experience smooth, rewarding and enjoyable, including dedicated PHEV insurance and Toyota charging solutions and also aims to ensure minimal environmental impact by maximising the mileage driven in EV mode.

For those in our midst who prefer a sporty touch, the GR Sport delivers a more dynamic driving experience and a motorsports-inspired character. The chassis has a 20mm wider tread and the suspension benefits from high-performance dampers, strengthened rear bracing and retuned springs and power steering for increased stability and an engaging drive. Lightweight 20 inch black alloy wheels, in an exclusive five-unit, twin-spoke design, also contribute to airflow management. You will not fail to recognise this version with its distinctive functional matrix grille design creates an eye-catching and sporty first impression with its GR exclusive hexagonal G mesh pattern, which creates a deeper 3D effect Moving to the interior, details emphasise the model’s connection to the multiple World Championship-winning Toyota Gazoo Team. There are discreet GR logos and red accents, including on the steering wheel, knee pads and the GR Sport-exclusive synthetic leather and suede seat upholstery. I must add I am looking forward to driving this version of the new RAV4!
