Danny Mullins Odds On To Take Rookie Honours on Mondello Debut!

Well known Irish Hunt Jockey Danny Mullins will make his motor racing debut this weekend in the Siltex Safety Fiesta Zetec Championship at Mondello Park. Danny is a son of successful trainers Tony Mullins and Mags Mullins and nephew to Willie and Tom Mullins, so to say horse racing is in his blood is a bit of an understatement.

Danny is also  a fan of horsepower of a different kind and has been seen attending a number of F1 races in recent times. Through SEAT Supercup racer Dave Maguire, who is a friend of his, he tested a Zetec Fiesta ahead of the July ICCR meeting and, perhaps unsurprisingly, was pretty close to the pace. He will drive the Dennings Car previously used to great effect by Alex Denning and Sean McGovern so we can expect him to be right in the mix. Having sat in alongside Josh Moffett in a rally car, Danny rented an R2 Fiesta for the Wexford Rally back in 2022 and absolutely loved being beside the wheel. He didn’t do too badly either- see the RIDE documentary below!

“Very few things in life compare to riding race horse at maximum speed,” Mullins told DirtFish. “But… the first day I sat in a rally car beside Josh, it frightened the living daylights out of me. When you’ve conquered your fear over the fences with little more than physics keeping you on a horse, you have a different perspective. As soon as I was out of the car I thought: I want more of that!”

Series sponsor Neil Murphy, above, is delighted to have Danny join the Siltex Safety grid this weekend. “He was fast when he tested  earlier this year and we have stayed in touch since. It will be great to see him mixing with with the pack on Sunday afternoon. I can’t wait!”

The headline might be a bit tongue in cheek, as even though we do have a Rookie Cup within the Zetec Championship, they don’t drive like Rookies and are often well inside the top ten overall. That said, if Danny can learn the International Track layout on Friday and take top tips from series leader Dave Maguire Junior, it wouldn’t be outside the realms of possibility to see him standing on the Mondello Park podium on Sunday evening!

The Siltex Safety Fiesta Zetec class will be on circuit for qualifying at 9:40am and the two races will be at 12:05pm and 15:30 respectively. Both races will be streamed live on the Irish Championship Circuit Racing (ICCR) Facebook Page and on the ICCR YouTube Channel.
