When Toyota introduced the Prius back in 1997, it marked the dawning of a new era for the hybrid and it soon caught the attention around the world; even Hollywood stars and royals were seen behind the wheel of the new wedge shaped car. Back then, everything about this newcomer was fresh and eye catching; I attended the original press launch and on that occasion I actually got behind the wheel of a Japanese version with its striking instrumentation and throughout its history I have driven all versions and new we have the fifth generation model with its softer yet very stand out styling; a vehicle that continues to be very much design lead.
To date, almost six million have been sold around the world with the USA a major market and with the latest to arrive on the motoring scene it will not be too long until the six million sales barrier is broken. The new Prius has a dual DNA at its heart with its combination of true electric vehicle (EV), performance and the convenience of hybrid technology. With a 13.6kWh battery it enables electric driving for up to 85km (53m), this enough to cover most routine daily journeys. For longer trips, or when charging is not practical, the system offers enhanced output and an ultra-low combined WLTP CO2 emissions rating of 12g/km (17inch wheels) – the lowest yet. Of course the distance achieved when using electric power will depend very much on the driving style of the driver.
Providing the power is a two litre petrol engine which produces 150bhp (152bhp/112kW) and it works in tandem with a new 161bhp (163bhp/120kW) transaxle front motor for a total system output of 220bhp (164kW). This is an increase on the previous model increase on the previous model and it delivers strong and responsive acceleration with rest to 100kph (62mph) in less than seven seconds.
My test drive with the new Prius was over challenging roads in the West of Scotland very much akin with our own roads in Ireland. Behind the wheel a pleasant driving experience, balance and handling have been enhanced, thanks to the Toyota New Global Architecture C platform, which brings lower weight and higher body rigidity for a more stable ride and a lower centre of gravity, helped by placing the EV battery under the rear seat and moving the fuel tank lower and forward, contributes to improved driving dynamics and agility. Depending on the market where the new Prius is sold wheel choice is seventeen or nineteen inches. The cabin is quite spacious and it delivers driving satisfaction and practicality with a clean and simple lay-out and it is finished in high-quality materials, accentuated by design elements which generate a dynamic feel and sense of purpose.
For the driver, his or her view is anchored by the fully digital combimeter, positioned within their field of vision, keeping their focus on the road ahead and the new-design instrument panel has a clean appearance that avoids intruding in the driver’s sight-line. Full marks to Toyota for that as often I find with many cars that too many distractions in the cabin take away from the pleasure of driving. In addition to delivering performance, efficiency and aesthetics, the new model is also a pioneer when it comes to innovative technologies, which includes the Toyota Safety Sense systems with software updates delivered seamlessly over the air. The front camera and radar can see further ahead and have a wider lateral and vertical view, allowing the detection of a wider range of potential hazards, including motorcycles and roadside objects, which all too often present hazards when driving. Front side radar sensors are added to support the Pre-Collision System, Lane Trace Assist and Front Cross Traffic Alert features; very much a complete package from this well-appointed Toyota.
The new Prius had just one minus in my book, its low styling might just be difficult on entry and exit for those should say of senior years. Finally many current Prius customers will warmly welcome the new arrival and there is no doubt that many new customers will be added.
