ON THE ROAD – IAN LYNAS DRIVES THE NEW MAZDA2 HYBRID

The demand for small cars continue s,and in this modern age such a vehicle is enjoyed by numerous drivers; ideal for the urban environment and a choice very often as a second car. Yes, the choice is wide and recently I spent a week with the new Mazda2 Hybrid which was a joint effort between Mazda and Toyota; the end result is excellent, economical and fun to drive. During my time with the car, I found myself making excuses to go places; the level of driver enjoyment was that good.

This model brings self-charging full hybrid powertrain technology to the Mazda range for the first time, a full hybrid that combines a 1,490cc 92PS three-cylinder petrol engine with a 59kW electric motor for a total system power of 116PS. Power is driven via a CVT automatic transmission, seamless in operation, and this new hybrid has bright performance; from rest to 100kph (62mph)is reached in 9.7 seconds and and CO2 emissions are 93-87g/km depending on the specification of wheel size, the choice is 15 or 16 inch. When you hit the start button you are in EV mode; smooth and quiet running in town or city with zero CO2, NOx particulate emissions.

Take to the open road and for everyday driving it is adjusted between the petrol engine and electric motor for optimum performance and of course the best possible fuel efficiency. We all like to pass a petrol pump as often as possible During deceleration and under braking, kinetic energy is recovered as electrical energy for storage in the high-performance battery. I must make it clear that there is no need to recharge from any external source and I for one have become very much a fan of hybrids; no charge or range anxiety with this Mazda. When it comes to styling, the new Mazda2 Hybrid has a distinctive front end just like its bigger brothers in the Mazda range; the interior is well appointed and can accommodate four adults; yes boot space is fairly limited, but fold the two front seats down and the amount of cargo space increases.

Think back a few years to the small car and hatchbacks were rare and some even were stretched to transport four adults; how times have changed. I can remember and not so very long ago when the small car was very much the poor relation to the big car in terms of standard equipment; thankfully that is long gone and the version I had on test had just about everything on board which I would desire with a set of wheels. The list included, alloy wheels, a reversing camera and this is a plus with any car in this age of ultra-tight public parking spaces; keyless entry, power mirrors and so the list progresses. It is fair to say that we expect a cocktail of goodies when it comes to the modern car.

The real enjoyment for me with the Mazda2 Hybrid was very much behind the wheel; handling was sharp, good braking power and excellent all round vision and the sound of the three litre engine when pressed on; it almost had a rally car feel. Yes I had a very fulfilling week with this little gem from the Mazda family. I must point out that depending the market you are in there are a choice of trims. Mazda claim that their new Mazda2 Hybrid is the perfect companion for the city; that may very well be true, but I found it a delight amidst some challenging country roads.
