Mondello Park is delighted to confirm that it has agreed with Leinster Motor Club to jointly promote the Leinster Trophy Car Races as part of its ICCR Championship event on 9/10 September 2023.

Dating back to 1934, the Leinster Trophy is considered one of the most prestigious trophies in Irish motor racing. It has always been the right of Leinster Motor Club to decide what particular race, in any given year, would be the recipient of the trophy. It has been awarded at the Skerries Road Races (1934), Tallaght Road Races (1935-48), Wicklow Road Races (1950-57), Dunboyne Road Races (1958-65), Bishopscourt (1967) and with Mondello Park opening in 1968 it was awarded every year up to 2020. With the trophy being awarded at Kirkistown events in 2021 and 2022, it makes it return to its spiritual home in 2023. The names of previous winners makes impressive reading. They include F1 World Champions Mike Hawthorn, Ayrton Senna and Mika Hakkinen. Other notable winners included Grand Prix driver John Watson, F1 team owner Eddie Jordan, Maurício Gugelmin, JJ Lehto and Ray Mallock.

The promoters will now look to decide which championship will compete for the Leinster Trophy itself and will announce this in the coming weeks. It is also proposed that other championships will be able to compete for additional Leinster Trophy perpetual awards for trophies such as the Holmpatrick Trophy, Dunlop Trophy, Goodyear Trophy and O’Reilly Trophy.

Brian McLoughlin, President of Leinster Motor Club stated “The Leinster Trophy has been and continues to be the most sought after trophy in Irish car racing. We are delighted that the Leinster Trophy will return to Mondello Park and we look forward to working with the team at Mondello Park in building a fantastic event around the Leinster Trophy.”

Commenting on the news, Roddy Greene, Managing Director of Mondello Park said “We are delighted that the Leinster Trophy is returning to Mondello Park. We have always enjoyed the Leinster Trophy Races event and are looking forward to working with Leinster Motor Club and our ICCR Championships in the build-up to our 9/10 September event which I am sure will be enjoyed by both competitors and spectators alike.”
