#WEC @MGriffinRacing looking for a points gain at #6hNurburgring

Irish Racing Driver Matt Griffin is en-route to Germany for this weekends round 3 of the 2017 World Endurance Championship being held at the iconic Nurburgring circuit.

Griffin returns with team mates Mok Weng Sun and Kieta Sawa in their Clearwater Racing entered, number 61 Ferrari 488 GTE.

This weekend see the final round of the European leg of the World Endurance Championship, the rest of the championship will see races being held in Mexico, The USA, Japan and China, before finishing in Bahrain.

“Going to great tracks like Nurburgring is one of the best parts of being involved in the WEC, obviously Le Mans is the jewel on the crown of the championship but each race really is a huge event. So far, apart from Le Mans, all the tracks have been new for my teammates and Nurburgring is no different. In saying that both Weng (Mok Weng Sun) and Kieta (Kieta Sawa) have done amazingly well getting up to speed and I expect this weekend to be no different” explained Matt.

The trio are currently leading the World Endurance Championship after finishing 5th at the 24h of Le Mans but 1st among the regular WEC runners, so taking maximum points, along with a 3rd place in Rd 2 at Spa and a victory in Rd 1 at Silverstone.

“It is great going into Nurburgring with the championship lead. Finishing 5th at Le Mans was not the prefect result but in terms of WEC points it was a great result. With the win at Silverstone and 3rd place at Spa we have been having a great run, it is important to keep pushing though as the competition, as you would expect, in the world championship is ferocious. In saying that Clearwater Racing is a great team so we will be pushing to extend the championship lead”.

Although he Cork based driver had an unexpected weekend off last weekend after his British GT Championship teammate crashed in Fridays FP1 which took them out of the race weekend, it has otherwise been non-stop this season and after this weekend Griffin will have consecutive races in Austria, Spa and Brands Hatch.

Matt continues, “Being busy is something I am very used too. I am due to race 32 times this year and I think racing that much definitely keeps you sharp”.

The weekend kicks off with 2 free practice sessions on Friday 14th July 2017, Qualifying is at 14.55 CET on Saturday and the 6 hours race starts at 13.00 CET on Sunday 16th July 2017.
