Fenton Steps it Up at Ginetta Junior Opener

Cameron Fenton impressed with a pair of runner up spots on Saturday as the 2017 Ginetta Junior Ireland championship kicked off at the ultra fast airfield circuit of Kirkistown in Northern Ireland.
Having shown well in testing, it was always going to be a battle between the Greystones driver and Patrick Dempsey, driving the ex Jordan Dempsey championship winning machine.
Despite not being able to get a tow, which is crucial on the long straights of Kirkistown, Cameron was happy to qualify second, just a few tenths off Dempsey. When the lights went out for race one, the 15 year old St Andrews College student matched revs and grip to perfection, rocketing off the line to lead the pack away. Having held the lead for a few laps, he was powerless to stop Dempsey taking the lead on the long back straight. The duo stayed close until the safety car was deployed due to a car stopping at the chicane. On the restart, Dempsey got the jump, and that is how it stayed until the chequered flag.
In race two, the duo matched each other off the line  but Dempsey drew ahead as they headed towards Colonial corner. With a car dropping oil around most of the circuit at half distance, Cameron was happy to back off and take his second runner up spot of the day.

Cameron Fenton: “I am happy enough with that to start the season. I should have been able to challenge for wins, but we seem to be lacking in straightline speed for some reason. Hopefully at the next rounds at Mondello Park, with new rubber, more corners and less straights, we can redress the balance!”

Cameron Fenton is a 15 year old racing driver from Greystones in County Wicklow. He started racing in Ginetta Junior Ireland when he was just 14 years old, His 2016 season was curtailed after a big accident at Kirkistown caused extensive damage to the car. Over the winter the car has been fully rebuilt and for the 2017 season, his father Willie, an experienced racer himself and Cameron, will prepare and run the car.
